"Suits for Soldiers" Helps Wounded Veterans
With the help of Men’s Wearhouse, Dignity U Wear & Haven Hospice have partnered together to provide local veterans participating in the Jacksonville-based Wounded Warrior Project with clothing that will enable them to successfully enter the civilian workforce.
"Suits for Soldiers" assists men and women to transition into the last phase of a program for wounded veterans that offers participants a range of college classes and services customized to their needs, helping them build career skills, train in veterans’ advocacy, and continue recovery toward a more independent life.
The Wounded Warriors Project, based in Jacksonville, FL, runs a 12-month program, called TRACK, to provide an integrated approach for wounded veterans that addresses long-term needs for education, training, advocacy and secondary rehabilitative care for the MIND, BODY and SPIRIT and allows wounded warriors the opportunity to meet educational needs and training, while receiving rehabilitative care for various injuries sustained while overseas.
The warriors attend college classes as a group, with the ability to draw from their shared experiences. As they head towards the end of the program they enter the externship phase in which theyare in need of appropriate clothing for interviews and jobs.
In mid-February, these Wounded Warriors met at Men’s Wearhouse at St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville and were greeted with open arms and smiling faces by the store's staff while being measured for suits. In early March, the group returned to the store to get their donated suits fitted.Ten days later, on March 19, 2010 the Wounded Warriors were presented with their suits. Everyone involved was very excited--particularly the warriors, who were really happy with their new suits!
Additional "Suits for Soldiers" were presented in May. Most recently, at the end of July, 11 wounded Jacksonville-area veterans, who were fitted for new suits the previous month were presented with their new suits as part of a special ceremony at the Wounded Warrior Project headquarters. The 11men who received the suits have been participating in the Wounded Warrior Project TRACK program as they prepare to enter the civilian workforce after honorably serving our country.
